The only pub in the village, The Stag’s Head in Esh Winning has closed for a major £460,000 refurbishment by Heineken owned Star Pubs & Bars1 which will see the tired drinkers pub transformed into a family and dog friendly local serving food for the first time.
Experienced licensees Michael and Tracy Miller will take the pub’s helm when it reopens at the end of August in time for the bank holiday. Food will be served from the start of September.
The rundown pub is to be totally overhauled, giving locals the comfortable and attractive decor, food, fresh barista style coffee, quality drinks and entertainment on their doorstep which previously they had to drive miles for.
The Stag’s Head is being reconfigured to increase covers, create a larger locals bar and make room for disabled loos. It will have a smart classic look with feature wallpaper, a striking wine cabinet and elaborate chalk board display along with eclectic bric-a-brac, mirrors and pendant style lighting. Fixed deep button back seating, herringbone timber flooring and wide reclaimed timber planks will all add to the ambience.
Outside, The Stag’s Head is being given a make-over – repainted in a French Grey, burgundy and cream with new lighting and signage. And to the rear of the pub, the beer garden is being landscaped to create a lawned area with seating for 40.
The menu at The Stag’s Head will include good value-for-money pub classics such as: pies, steaks, burgers, curries, fish and chips and a cracking Sunday lunch. There will be vegan and vegetarian options as well as a children’s menu with special kid-sized cutlery and crockery.
The same drinks will be on offer as before, but with the addition of Birra Moretti, Fosters, and Amstel and introduction of two real ale pumps – a first for the pub. There will also be a more extensive spirits range, with good, better and best options.
Michael and Tracy will continue the darts and pool, adding a pub quiz and bingo night and live sports on Sky and BT.
The couple are returning to the area with their four children and two dogs to be closer to family and friends. For the last seven years Michael has been General Manager of Bushey sports and social club. Tracy also has connections with the area as both her parents were born in North Shields and she regularly visits the area to keep in touch with close family and friends.
Michael said: “Tracy and I will be very hands on in the kitchen and behind the bar. We’re really looking forward to coming back north and immersing ourselves in village life. We want The Stag’s Head to be a hub of the community where people of all ages and backgrounds can come together and where there is always something going on.”
Gary Corney, Star Pubs & Bars regional operations director said: “The Stag’s Head is being totally transformed, which together with the introduction of food, will broaden its appeal, making it more sustainable. The refurbishment is part of £50 million being invested by Heineken this year in pubs like The Stag’s Head to help them keep pace with peoples’ changing needs and expectations so that they can thrive for the long term. I wish Tracy and Michael success and happiness at The Stag’s Head and look forward to visiting it.”
