Work is set to start on 23rd September on a £380,000 refurbishment to reopen The Lamb on Berkhamsted High Street after a 15-month closure and transform it into a great quality contemporary pub with a new restaurant and garden.
The project is being undertaken by Heineken-owned Star Pubs & Bars and local residents, Russell and Michelle North, licensees of The Bull at Berkhamsted, and Alex Legret and Dan Twine of mobile cocktail bar company, Three Piece Bar.
The project’s start ends uncertainty in the town about The Lamb’s future. The pub is expected to reopen in early November, creating 15 jobs.
The outside of The Lamb will receive extensive renovation – including redecoration and new lighting and signage – to make it an attractive focal point of the high street once again. A stunning south facing courtyard garden will be created at the rear with festoon lighting, covers and heating for year-round alfresco drinking and dining.
Inside work will give the pub a stylish new look, whilst retaining original features such as old beams and bringing the open fire back into use. The revamp will add a 36-cover restaurant and a cosy snug, refit the kitchen and install toilets in a new rear extension.
The restaurant will serve modern pub food with fresh ingredients, using local suppliers wherever possible, and offer light lunches, afternoon teas and a dinner menu. A separate bar will cater for those wanting to drink and socialise, and will also offer small plates and sharing platters.
The team want to put The Lamb on the map for the quality of its drink as well as its food and are upgrading the cellar with state-of-the-art dispense equipment to ensure consistently excellent beer and cider. The drinks range will span: craft and cask beers; premium wines, cocktails and spirits, and barista quality coffee.
Says Russell – who has run The Bull for three years: “It has been sad to see such a lovely old pub with so much potential closed for so long. We want to bring it back to life and add to that end of the high street.
“We’ve spent three years searching Hertfordshire for the perfect pub; it’s great to have found one so close to home. Berkhamsted is a thriving town and I feel lucky to have two pubs here.”
Dan and Alex will head up running the pub’s front of house service. They will be joined by Russell’s son and daughter Lucy and Jake, enabling Russell and Michelle to maintain their hands on position as licensees of The Bull.
Comments Will Rice, operations director for Star Pubs & Bars: “We’re delighted to be joining forces with local people to revitalise The Lamb and give it the investment it needs. They have a fantastic knowledge of Berkhamsted, understand what residents want and care about the town. Their plans are very exciting; everything is being done to the highest standard, so The Lamb should have a bright future under their stewardship.
“Star Pubs & Bars is a passionate supporter of the great British pub and we’re investing £50 million in pubs around the country like The Lamb this year.”
Star Pubs & Bars acquired The Lamb from Punch Taverns in March 2018.
