WORK STARTED ON £390,000 TRANSFORMATION OF KIRKBY-IN-ASHFIELD PUB

Work has started* on a £390,000 refurbishment of The Kingsway pub on Kingsway  in Kirkby-in-Ashfield to transform it into a great quality, family-friendly local. The investment is being undertaken by Heineken-owned Star Pubs & Bars and will see Henry and Leah Laycock take the helm as the pub’s new licensees.

The redevelopment is expected to take seven weeks. The Kingsway is scheduled to reopen in early December, creating more than 15 new jobs.

Work to the outside will paint and clad the building to give it a smart new look and enhance the neighbourhood. The pub’s garden will become a feature with a children’s play area, spacious patio, seating for 96, festoon lighting and new planting.

The inside of The Kingsway will receive a major makeover to make it contemporary, comfortable and welcoming. A kitchen refit and the creation of a dining area will enable the Laycocks to introduce a menu of pub favourites ranging from pies and steaks to burgers and curries as well as a children’s menu with special kid-sized cutlery and crockery. The couple are adding a barista-quality coffee machine too and will serve food and hot drinks all day.

The revamp will also put The Kingsway on the map for sport, installing Sky and BT Sports along with high-resolution screens and a state-of-the-art sound system in the bar area. The Laycocks are keen for The Kingsway to be a hub of the community; the couple will open up the pub as a meeting place for local organisations and good causes and make activities and entertainment a focus. Quiz and music nights, children’s games afternoons, darts teams, charity fundraisers and fun days are all on the agenda.

Though Henry and Leah have worked in hospitality for more than a decade, The Kingsway is their first pub. Says Henry, “We’ve spent two years looking for our ideal pub. We love Kirkby-in-Ashfield and knew The Kingsway was the one for us as soon as we walked in. We wanted a pub that would be a focal point of local life where people could get together and socialise. The plans for The Kingsway are amazing and tick all our boxes; the pub will provide something for everyone – whether it’s morning coffee, a good lunch or a great night out.”

Comments Star Pub & Bars regional operations director Grant Morgan-Tolworthy: “We’re firm believers in the future of the Great British local. We’re investing £50 million this year in pubs like The Kingsway to help them keep pace with peoples’ changing needs and expectations so that they can thrive for the long term.

“Henry and Leah have an excellent track record in hospitality and we’re delighted to be joining forces with them to broaden The Kingsway’s appeal and give it a new lease of life. The pub will offer lots more reasons to visit when the work is done. We’re working flat out to reopen it well in time for Christmas.”
